Basically I'm not sure how to get it to work. The solution is to update the firmware, which seems to be what is affected with this bug. From the list of backups, select the backup where the file you want to recover still exists, then click Continue. For those that have already tried a fresh install or a restore from another Mac computer and encountered the error, restarting will not help and neither will installation from a USB installer or a Time Machine backup. Now select the backup that you created on your disk then select Continue. On the Restore From Time Machine page, hit the Continue button. On the utilities screen, select the Restore From Time Machine Backup option. Either way you should eventually boot into Recovery Mode. I even have hot corners set that theoretically set "never sleep my machine!" but when the MA starts it puts the computer in a funny state that doesn't seem to respect those. Once the screen shows up, select From a Mac, Time Machine backup, or startup disk. Don’t worry: you can boot into macOS recovery without a recovery partition using another keyboard shortcut: Option+Command+R. Is there a command line version of that tool? I'm able to find the TM drive, I'm able to login, I'm able to detect the existing (encrypted) backup, I'm able to enter the password and get to "Loading backup." and that just sits for hours with no discernible progress until the computer forcefully sleeps and that seems to break things. I've been trying the Migration Assistant and it's just hanging indefinitely at this point. Remember that time I said, "how does one accomplish this stuff from the command line, so I can avoid wasting time with GUIs that may or may not hang indefinitely, so I can have better debugging info, etc"? Well. Yup, I totally agree and that's what I'm trying. Since you are not familiar with using TM, I would suggest you use Migration Assistant to transfer the account.
